Having always loved making her own handcrafted things, when Stephanie discovered soap making, it was a match made in suds. The first time she held a soap that she’d made and moulded, she knew instantly that she wanted to continue doing this and even lather it into a business. From the moment her soap-making prowess came flying out of the hobby gates, Steph knew fairly quickly that she wanted to make something more of it. As soon as she’d gathered some experience and could see a path forward, she gave herself a year to come up with a business plan and prepare for taking it to market.
Always on the lookout for her next soapy combo, she finds that inspiration can come from everything from landscapes, nature and clothing to foods and art. Muse and motivation seems to follow a timeline – first, she decides on a design theme – like Christmas. Then, by workshopping the colouring and scents, Steph sets the soapy scene. Occasionally, when making a product like her Facial Care Masks, she locks in the Essential Oils first for the particular properties they bring to the table. For instance, Lemon Essential Oil is particularly powerful for purifying the skin.
Learning all the basics for her business through her first market stall, Steph learnt that keeping a streamlined presence ensures that your products always stay the hero. Even though it’s time-consuming, she credits curating a signature look means that your customers will always recognise you.
Navigating the perils of being a small business owner, Steph knows that work never really ends. This means that your brain is always switched on; thinking of and testing new ideas and products. Added to the picture is her 9-month old son who’s in the business of making it very difficult to get work done. All the blood, sweat and tears are worth it when people react to the niche she’s carved out. Now, embracing the title of Soap Innovator, Steph admits it’s a title she’d never thought of but none the less, she’s truly proud of what she’s created from scratch.
Packaging is always a megastar. It’s what attracts Steph to other seller’s products and in turn, it’s what attracts her soap lovers to Made To Love. Staying true to her own style, she strives to keep her packaging original and creative. Discovering Avery labels makes her job easier. For the majority of her products, the labels are so integral to her operation that she’s specifically designed all of her packaging to fit them.
