Dog lovers, Ryan and Wayne, first came across animal rescue when they adopted their beautiful beagle – Harley. Then, while browsing Facebook one Sunday, up popped Darby’s picture: a Chihuahua-X from an Animal Shelter in Western Sydney. It was love at first sight and without a second thought, they went to meet him the next morning. Darby had been badly neglected and dumped, so taking on this timid untrained dog was no small task.
Shockingly malnourished, Ryan and Wayne did a crash-course in canine nutrition to nurse Darby back to furry fine fit. Cooking his meals and training him, they started baking treats as a reward. As Darby grew into an affectionate, loyal and obedient fur-friend, their baked, air-dried doggy treats grew into a hobby. After finding a doggy demand for their deli-delicacies, they started selling small batches.
Their baking began to take off but in the same short time, Darby got sick and passed quickly; loyal and giving until the end. After their sudden loss, these makers decided to honour Darby and everything he’d taught them by creating a brand bearing his name. The two took their niche treats to market, meeting market-goers by carving an authentic identity with polished, quality products, accessible pricing and beautiful displays. Doing something that no one else was doing, they stood out by being a not-just-another copycat.
Now, enjoying the constant challenge of being outside their comfort zones and gaining momentum, Ryan and Wayne get to spend time with their woofers doing something they both love. When they’re not busy baking treats for barkers, you can find them doting over some downtime by watching a few flicks.
When it comes to presentation, they prioritise packaging, supplying premium looking products that customers expect. In a visually-driven marketplace, the outside counts as much as the inside. Even in a market stall context; handwritten stickers don’t cut it. The ‘Darby’s’ brand not only carries Darby’s legacy but it’s also what distinguishes it in the marketplace. Ryan and Wayne want their bakery-clients to know exactly who’s responsible for the tasty treats they love.
To maintain their contemporary aesthetic, the Darby brand uses Matt White labels in various sizes. Avery’s WePrint is significantly suited to small businesses as it offers owners the flexibility to print smaller quantities when and where they need them. Next on Ryan and Wayne’s radar is to experiment with the rest of the range as they develop new doggy delights.
