When dog lovers Ryan and Wayne first adopted Darby, little did they know this chihuahua- cross would change their lives forever. A rescue from an animal shelter in Western Sydney, it was pure luck that Ryan and Wayne were scrolling through Facebook on a Sunday morning when Darby’s picture appeared in their feed. And it was love at first sight. Without a second thought they organised to go and meet him the next morning, and by lunchtime they were bringing Darby home to meet their first rescue pup, the beautiful beagle, Harley.
Poor Darby had been badly neglected and then dumped. He was incredibly malnourished, extremely timid and completely untrained. But that didn’t deter Ryan and Wayne. They spent hours researching canine nutrition to find the best recipes to nurse Darby back to health. And with a lot of love, tenderness and home-cooked meals, Darby began to put on weight and lose his shyness.
Once he had gained some of his strength back, it was time to start training Darby in the basic commands. To help with training, Ryan and Wayne began baking doggy treats to offer as rewards and encouragement. Not only did Darby and Harley love the treats, so did their friends’ dogs. It wasn’t long before Ryan and Wayne were baking up extra trays of treats to sell in small batches.
While Ryan and Wayne’s dog treats were becoming popular, Darby’s health started deteriorating, and their loyal and lovable family member passed away quickly. Ryan and Wayne decided to honour Darby’s time with them by taking their dog treats to market and creating a brand bearing his name. Just like Darby had done with them, the pair quickly worked their way into the hearts of dog owners at the market, and their quality products and beautiful displays soon became a stall favourite.
One of the secrets to their success has been using customised labels to display their dog treats. Because a market is such a visually driven arena, it was important to Ryan and Wayne that the packaging for their products be just as appealing as their price point or taste.
