For the creative family behind Mangalo Home and Body, bespoke candle making was the next logical step after mastering the art of cold-pressed soaps. In the last few years, Amanda has embraced her love of creating beautiful, vegan-friendly products that allow people to treat themselves, and others, minus the exorbitant price-tag.
Amanda got into the beauty industry in 2013, using the cold-pressed method to make artisan soaps. Using hand-chosen ingredients, the products are so considered that any member of the family could tell you everything that goes into making their soaps.
Seeing how much her daughter loved burning scented candles, her artistic family – regular quilters, knitters and fused-glass jewellery makers, decided to try their hand at crafting hand-poured, small batch soy candles. After a year of experimenting with scents and testing formulas, they were ready to share them with the world.
She began showcasing her products at markets around Adelaide, until, in 2016, they rebranded as Mangalo – named after the street Amanda lived on when her children were born. With a new logo and branding, a narrowed-down selection of core scents, and a new range of artisan body products, her offering had expanded. Now including candles, soap, body scrubs and bath bombs, Magnalo was hitting its stride.
With a number of successful markets now under her belt, Amanda’s advice to other small businesses is to create a multi-level display to showcase your brand’s personality. Use things like shelves, boxes and plants to add different heights and textures. This helps catch the attention of potential customers and makes products easier to view than if they were flat on a table. Amanda has also found the perfect balance – not too cluttered, but not so sparse that it looks like she can’t meet her customers’ needs.
In the last three or four years, Amanda has pared her core candle range down to 10 scents, with the option of creating special or seasonal products, so that only the absolute best are available. Amanda uses Avery WePrint for her clear candle jar stickers, and vinyl stickers for her body scrubs. This allows Amanda to give her products a polished edge, highlighting the top of the range ingredients and the dedication that goes into their creation. Her indulgent products are a luxury, and Avery labels help her to present them as such.
Amanda finds Avery WePrint a really easy and accessible service – the labels arrive on time, in perfect condition, with no misprints. Using Avery not only saves her and her family time, it means they never have to muck around with expensive ink or wrestle with paper jams. That leaves more family time for feeding the ducks at the local lake, walking the dogs and enjoying movie nights as they plan their next business move.
