Amanda and her family are passionate about creating artisan products that are beautiful to the senses, including the way they’re presented to their customers. Today, Mangalo Home and Body is a thriving business producing vegan friendly candles and body products with a luxurious look and feel but with a very affordable price tag. The product range now includes candles, soap, body scrubs and bath bombs.
Here Amanda talks about how her business got its start and how she uses customised labels as part of her successful market stall displays.
Take the time to get it right
Beginning in 2013, Amanda’s entry into the beauty industry began with making cold-pressed soaps. It was important to Amanda and her family that the soaps they created be cruelty-free, environmentally friendly and ethically sourced. But the soaps also needed to have a look and texture and price point that aligned with their vision of a product that was an everyday treat for their customers.
While the research and product testing stage of the base formula was happening, there was much discussion with the family on each version of the recipe. So involved are Amanda’s family, that each person can name the ingredients that make up the recipe. Once the base formula was created, it was time to add the different scents and colourings that would give each product its own personality.
Working so closely with her family, Amanda soon noticed how much her daughter enjoyed burning scented candles. It was therefore only natural that these would become the next product to add to the range. Again, care was taken to make sure the recipe was just right and it took a year of experimenting with different scents and formulas before she was happy to start showcasing her hand-poured, small batch soy candles at markets around Adelaide.
While the markets were a success, it wasn’t until 2016, when the business underwent a rebranding exercise that products really made an impact. Their name was changed to Mangalo (named after the street she lived on when her children were born), a new logo was created and new labels designed that attract the eye and showcase the natural ingredients that make up each product.
First impressions count
Amanda says part of her success at markets came from giving serious thought to how her products were displayed on her stall.
Her advice to other small businesses is to create a multi-level display that showcases your brand’s personality. You want to use items such as shelves, boxes and plants, to catch the attention of customers walking past. And by adding different heights and textures you create interest because your products are easier to see than if they were just flat on the table.
Another tip is to find the perfect balance of products and space. You need enough stock so that you meet your customer’s needs, but not too much that it looks cluttered.
She also says you must consider how your products are labelled, as this can have an impact on the ‘busyness’ of your space. Are there consistencies in the design and colours? Does each product look like it belongs with the one next to it? Are there common elements that tie them together? You want your customers’ eyes to gentle transition from one product to the next and good labelling helps them do this.
In the last 3-4 years, Amanda has pared her candle range down to 10 core scents, with the option of creating special or seasonal products, including limited editions.
This means she needs a printer who can produce large and small scale print runs with a consistent finish, no matter the order volume. Because whether it’s jar labels for candles, or vinyl labels for body wash, it’s important the quality of the labels matches the quality of the product to achieve the high-end look she’s aiming for.
For this creative and busy family, choosing the right printer to supply their labels was an important step in their business success. They didn’t want to have to be worrying about running out of ink cartridges, or dealing with jammed printers or misaligned labels. By choosing a printer that can deliver quickly and consistently, Amanda and her family have more time for walking the dogs and enjoying movie nights as they plan their next business move.
